SOLAR PUMP FOR KIMUKA GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL
PROJECT: Solar pump for Kimuka Girls Secondary School
Objective: Install a hybrid water pump for Kimuka Girls’ Secondary School.
Summary: Kimuka girls school currently serves about 1000 students. They spend approximately $1000 to $1500 on power per month. Purchasing enough food, particularly vegetables to feed the girls is a constant challenge for the school which is situated in an arid area. We hope to install a solar-powered water pump in the school to help irrigate about 2 acres of land and grow sufficient vegetables for the girls and staff.
No. of children: 1474 girls and 60 members of staff
Partner Background: Kimuka Girls’ plays a crucial role in the community. It offers education, shelter, and food to the girls, most of whom come from very far away. The school is located in a dry area where agriculture is impossible without irrigation. Constant water supply for domestic use like washing is a challenge, let alone, for food production. The school is also burdened with increasing food prices and high energy costs. This school is a safe haven for girls escaping early marriages and harmful cultural practices like FGM which is at 63% in the county. The recent drought only exacerbated the situation.
Partner Voices
Our partnership with Kitechild and their role in helping us start the Shamba (Kenyan for farm) and dairy farm has eliminated expenditure for vegetables and milk improving the children's nutrition and health greatly. The water borehole, the vegetables and the milk has also brought the community closer to us, as they come to get water and buy milk and vegtables. We are now coexisting well.

Kitechild doesn't give us handouts or tokens, they give us VALUE. They provided us with the seeds and funding to build two greenhouses and today we have greenhouses full of green tomatoes and are expanding the farm to grow onions and potatoes outside in the open air. This is never heard of before in Masai land, growing one's own food, but with their help we did it.
